The Role of Plasma Formation in Continuum Generation

Continuum Generation (CG) is the generation of white light from a quasimonochromatic source focused into some sample material. CG is useful in the laboratory as a tunable short pulse light source and has potential for use in telecommunications. Many different nonlinear optical effects contribute to CG including self-focusing, self-phase modulation, and the subject of my research, plasma formation. Plasma reflects some of the source pulse, reducing its effective intensity. My experiment uses a short pulse laser system and a pump-probe to determine how this plasma decays in CG from a sapphire crystal apparatus.
